Proxmox VE is the base layer of my homelab, and most of what I write about it comes from fixing something on my own nodes. This page collects every Proxmox guide on the site in the order you are likely to need them: install the node, sort out storage, protect it with backups, then run services and manage it day to day.
1. Install and first steps
- Install Proxmox VE 9.1 on Bare Metal — from USB installer to a working node.
- Proxmox VE Post Install Script — fix the repositories and remove the subscription nag.
2. Storage, disks and migrations
- Add LVM-Thin Storage in Proxmox and Migrate LXC Containers — when the NVMe volume group is nearly full.
- Migrate Proxmox LXC to NVMe — retire a quietly failing SSD, one container at a time, with rollback.
- Replace the Proxmox SSD Without Reinstalling — move the boot drive to a bigger or faster disk.
- Scrutiny SMART Monitoring on Proxmox LXC — readable drive health instead of raw smartctl output.
- Proxmox Ceph Home Cluster Setup — when Ceph makes sense at home and when it does not.
3. Backups
- Dedicated Proxmox Backup Server Setup (Part 1) — PBS on its own hardware.
- Proxmox Backup Server Automation with Home Assistant (Part 2) — power the backup box on only when it is needed.
- NAS Backup and Restore: ZFS, Borg, Restic — a full disaster-recovery plan around the node.
4. Services running on Proxmox
- Self-Hosted Immich on Proxmox with ZFS — family photo search without Google Photos.
- Self-Host WireGuard VPN on Proxmox — remote access into the homelab.
- OneDrive Proxmox LXC ZFS Mirror and the follow-up OneDrive LXC disk IO fix.
5. Managing Proxmox from a web dashboard
I built Stashboard to handle the routine Proxmox work from one page. The complete guide to managing Proxmox from a web dashboard links every feature: creating LXC containers and VMs, snapshots and clones, restores, consoles, update monitoring and node alerts.
